Cooking with a Wallflower

Recommendations Wallflower Weekly Faves

Wallflower Weekly Finds, 32

I love coming out from work and seeing this pretty sunset lighting up the sky.

I wonder if anyone thought it was weird that I stopped in the middle of the parking lot at Safeway with my phone aimed upwards.

No worries. I looked before I stopped at the side of a car to take this photo.

How often do you eat breakfast in the morning?

I’ve always heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which makes sense since we need the energy to get us through the rest of the day. But waking up and getting ready for school or work, sometimes the idea of breakfast just doesn’t have its appeal.

But these, these I can wake up for in the morning. These I can quickly make and reheat.

Oh, I hope you had a fantastic weekend!

I was at Brit+Co’s Re:make Festival on Saturday and was wowed by all the small businesses present. So many unique handmade goods to browse through and delicious foods to try! And then of course, there were the DIY stations for making your own totes, leather feather necklaces, key chains, magnets. It was so much fun! And best of all, everything was free!

I’ll definitely be sharing pictures with you in a couple days.

Basil Teriyaki Shrimp | Cooking with a Wallflower

I adore teriyaki sauce. I swear, it complements almost everything. So if I could, I’d probably use it with everything.

Whenever I’m at a Japanese restaurant, I’m always ordering something with teriyaki. Whether it’s chicken, salmon, sushi rolls topped with teriyaki sauce, there’s almost always something in my meal that has teriyaki. It’s such a versatile sauce that’s perfect with almost everything.

So, in today’s recipe, I decided that I wanted to try to create a twist to the classic teriyaki sauce. Slightly spicy with the delicious aromatic flavor of basil, this teriyaki glazed shrimp tastes oh so very amazing.

Whipping up the teriyaki sauce and cooking the shrimp takes only a few minutes. Served with rice, you’ll have dinner ready in absolutely no time at all.

Fresh Fig Jam

Jam made from fresh figs with a little bit of sugar and water cooked over low heat on a stovetop. This fresh fig jam is delicious with crackers and on toast.

Fresh Fig Jam | Cooking with a Wallflower

Figs are one of those fruits that you either love or well, not. They’re also pretty pricy at the market.

Luckily, there’s a fig tree in the front yard several houses down from my grandma’s house. The owner of that tree doesn’t like to eat the figs so he lets us pick as many as we want.

Have you ever gone fig picking? I swear, it’s the worse task ever. Ripe figs smashed on the ground after they’ve fallen off the branches. Sticky sap coming out from the stems of the figs. It’s a mess. You have to wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty because the bottom of the shoes is going to get sticky. Like, sticking to the cement kind of sticky. Yuck.

But figs have a unique flavor that you can’t find with any other fruit.

With so many ripe figs, it’s hard to eat them all. The simplest way to use all those figs? To make jams out of them.

This jam recipe is super easy to follow. There are really only 3 ingredients that you need: figs, water, and sugar.

Sun-Dried Tomato Pistou

Sun-dried tomatoes, fresh basil, and garlic blended in olive oil until smooth. This Sun-Dried Tomato Pistou is delicious and so simple to make with only five ingredients.

Sun-Dried Tomato Pistou | Cooking with a Wallflower

This sun-dried tomato pistou. Look at its vibrancy.

I can’t even begin to describe how good it tastes.

If you love fresh pesto and sun-dried tomatoes, this is definitely something you have to try. Soon.

Sun-Dried Tomato Pistou | Cooking with a Wallflower

I confess. I had no idea what pistou was until about a month ago when I ordered arborio rice with pistou from Farmstead. And that’s only after I looked it up online.

Pistou is a variation of pesto that originated from France. In pesto, you have fresh basil, olive oil, pine nuts, garlic, and parmesan. In pistou, you really only need basil, garlic, and olive oil. Apparently, pesto varies from region to region depending on the ingredients that are available, which makes sense, and the name changes too. The area where pistou originated from didn’t have nuts so it was omitted from the sauce.

But no matter which you’re trying to make, pesto or pistou, the ingredients are simple and easy to obtain. Plus, you can blend them together in less than 5 minutes.
