It’s Outside Lands in San Francisco this weekend. Have you heard of the event?

I don’t go because it’s out of my budget. And as a local resident, I get a little annoyed because I can hear the music in my own home, and occasionally, I can feel the vibrations too. If you’ve been to San Francisco, you know how difficult it can be to find parking, and when there are events, it’s almost impossible unless you’re super lucky. So when you live near the event, you know not to move your car if you park in the streets because it’ll be impossible to find a spot when you come back. One year, my dad had to park his car 30 blocks away and take the bus home because it was that hard to find a spot in our neighborhood. So if you’re headed to San Francisco this weekend, and you’re going anywhere near Golden Gate Park, expect it to be impossible to find parking. lol

Summer Berry Salad | Cooking with a Wallflower

I’m so excited to introduce this salad recipe to you. If you’ve been following me the last few days, you know that I’ve been eating my way through Southern California. I hope that you enjoyed reading about my little adventures. While that was fun and extremely filling, I missed eating meals made at home. Less oil, less fat, and just plain refreshing.

Life of a Wallflower, 15 – Wallflower in LA Day 4

Our last day in Southern California meant we had to get in a few more bakeries and restaurants before heading back home to the Bay Area.

We woke up early to pack and then headed to Pop’s Café in Downey for one last meal. Pop’s Café is a small restaurant, hidden in a plaza. Even if you’re looking for the restaurant, you might just miss it. That’s what happened to us. The wait was about an hour since we were a big group, but the food was amazing. I highly recommend stopping here if you have the chance.

Eggs Benedict topped with slices of ham and a side of Irish potatoes, which were crispy hash browns topped with onions and bell peppers. So very tasty. Then again, I love eggs benedict. =)

Life of a Wallflower, 14 – Wallflower in LA Day 3

We started Day 3 of our LA trip very early because there were so many other bakeries and restaurants we wanted to hit before returning home.

We decided to head to Long Beach for brunch at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles. The line was super long, and we had to wait an hour before we were seated.

If you haven’t heard about this place, they’re famous for their fried chicken. You remove the bone from the chicken and wrap it in waffle, drizzled with maple syrup and hot sauce.

Chicken and Waffles

This omelette is filled with fried chicken and cheese and came with a side of waffle. While it was good, it’s not my favorite type of food, and certainly not something I wanted so early in the morning. Especially not after the buffet we had the night before.

Life of a Wallflower, 13 – Wallflower in LA Day 2

We began Day 2 late. After indulging in so much food our first day in Southern California, we slept in.

When we were finally ready to explore Southern California, we decided to head over to Jazz Cat to try another hot pot spot. It was over 90 degrees outside, but we’ve heard good things about this place so we decided to go. I actually liked this spot more than Boiling Point. I like that there were more options in soup bases and that you get to add your ingredients. That way your meat and vegetables can be cooked to your liking when you want it to be.

I love having an individual hot pot. It means you can order whatever you like.

Life of a Wallflower, 12 – Wallflower in LA Day 1

I’ve been so excited for this mini trip to Southern California for two reasons: to celebrate finally getting my dental hygiene license and to eat good food.

Seriously. My sisters, cousins, and I planned this trip mostly to visit our relatives and to eat.

My ultimate goal? To find macaron ice cream sandwiches.

So today, I wanted to share with you some of the places we visited. =)

Happy early weekend!

As I’m writing this post, I’m in the car on my way to LA for a mini family vacation, but don’t worry, I still plan to post to the best of my abilities. I mentioned in my previous post that I’m not used to hot weather, yet I’m venturing into hotter weather. Luckily, I have macaron ice cream sandwiches to look forward to. I didn’t even know they existed until my sister accidentally stumbled across a photo of it on Instagram. I’ll share photos of our trip through Instagram and in a Life of a Wallflower post in a few days once I’m back from my trip.

Zucchini and Squash Blossom Salad

Julienned zucchini, sweet grape tomatoes, and shredded squash blossoms combined to create a delicious summer salad. Drizzled with your favorite dressing, this easy to make salad is both cool and refreshing, great for a hot summer day.

Zucchini and Squash Blossom Salad | Cooking with a Wallflower

I am a total San Franciscan girl. I was born, raised, and currently living in the city by the bay. I’m used to the cool, overcast, and often foggy weather. So when I’m in a city where the temperature is over 90 degrees? I feel like I’m about to melt.

These last few days I’ve been pre-vacationing in the South Bay, where the weather is the complete opposite of San Francisco, hot and humid. I want icy cold drinks. I want something cold and refreshing to eat. Nothing warm or anything that requires much cooking because the stove makes the kitchen too hot.

Raspberry Peach Mint Coconut Water

Raspberry Peach Mint Coconut Water | Cooking with a Wallflower

During the summer, when the weather is hot, we need to keep ourselves hydrated for many reasons but mainly to quench our thirst. Too little water during a heat wave can cause heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. My drink of choice is usually icy cold water.

I love drinking icy cold water, especially when adding fruits and mint for an infusion of flavor. But sometimes I want a slight variation.

Life of a Wallflower Part 11 – Registered Dental Hygienist

I have really exciting news to share with you in this Life of a Wallflower post.

As many of you know, I’ve been pursuing a career in dental hygiene for awhile now. During these last few months, I’ve been stressing over my licensing exam. Many of you have offered support, encouragement, and well wishes during these difficult months. I wanted to take the time to thank you for that! So I’m excited to share with you, that as of today, I’m officially a registered dental hygienist! =)

I spent my day doing absolutely nothing. I’ll work hard tomorrow to write a recipe. Today, I treated myself to one of my favorite Vietnamese desserts at Bambu.

Bambu

Have you had che before? It’s definitely different from any other dessert. You can usually find it in the dessert section at a Vietnamese restaurant. But if you’re lucky enough to find a place that specializes in these desserts, you’ll find that the variations are extensive. =)
