Cooking with a Wallflower

Recommendations Wallflower Weekly Faves

Wallflower Weekly Finds, 97

It’s been raining soo much lately. If it’s not raining, it’s super cold, and dark, and gloomy. But, it’s said to be storming this weekend in the Bay Area. Which would be perfect for hot tea and a good book. Or maybe hot chocolate?

What are you doing this weekend?

My sister is going to Disneyland this week without me! She’s celebrating her boyfriend’s birthday, but still! I can be jealous.

Honestly though, Disneyland isn’t worth it for me. Because I’m terrified of roller coasters. I don’t like the loops, the drops, or that feeling like my stomach is leaping everywhere. Which means roller coasters are out. Did I mention I don’t like heights? Yeah… Amusement parks are not worth it for me, especially since it’s over $100 per ticket these days. lol

But since the drive to Southern California is long, my sister is going to need something to snack on. Plus, in just a little over a month, I’ll be headed to Long Beach to go on a cruise to Ensenada. I’m sooo excited! 2017 = new adventures.

So it’s time to start planning. =)

And just like that, we’re in 2017, and the holiday season is over.

I always think it’s a little sad when the new year starts. Mostly because the moment fall begins in late September, there’s so much to look forward to. So many holiday events to plan for: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Then when it hits January, it feels like there’s not much to look forward to. At least, not until it gets closer to summer. Maybe that’s just me.

And with January comes all these resolutions. I am so terrible at keeping my new year’s resolutions that I don’t even make them anymore. Instead, I set achievable goals for myself. Like traveling more, writing more, staying more organized. Things like that.

Do you make resolutions? Or do you create goals?

Today, I wanted to share with you a super easy recipe: cilantro lime rice.

Sometimes eating rice can be so boring, especially when it’s a staple in your household. Yes, it’s a side dish so it’s meant to be eaten with other dishes. But still! So I thought we could change it up a little bit.

I’m not really into creating new year’s resolutions, but I like to set goals for each new year. Nothing too crazy but always something that I’d enjoy trying to achieve. This year? Just traveling more. And those plans are already being set in motion. =)

What are your new year’s resolutions or goals? I would love to hear yours!

2016 Recipe Fails

It’s the end of the year, so I thought we could finish up with… my 2016 recipe fails!

Obviously all the photos on my blog are meant to be enticing and are styled and edited to be that way. Otherwise, you might not look twice at them.

But throughout the year, there are many, and I mean many, recipes that didn’t make it onto the blog at all. Sometimes the flavors are just awful, sometimes the dish tastes good but isn’t photogenic. And of course, there are the every day meals that aren’t meant for the blog that didn’t turn out so well either.

Lots of caked on burnt foods in my skillets. Thankfully I have baking soda on hand to help dissolve all the inedible… things.

2016 Recipe Fails | Cooking with a Wallflower

So I’m sharing with you, the not so great recipes of 2016. I’ll be honest. It’s sort of fun in a therapeutic kind of way to share these photos with you. I spend so much time creating recipes and trying to make them look appetizing. But sometimes, it’s impossible. And yet, I still try. As you can see below. At least they weren’t a complete waste of time since they get a place here. Lol.

Happy Friday!

In just one weekend, I already have so much planned! I’m soo excited, but how am I going to fit everything in?

Thankfully, I only work part day today. Then it’s time to get ready for our annual office holiday party. This year we’re going to Fogo de Chao, a Brazillian all you can eat steakhouse in downtown SF. I have never eaten at a Brazillian steakhouse before, but I’ve heard great things about it so I’m super excited. But the idea of all that meat makes me feel full already. I’ll be posting all my dinner pics on Instagram.

In the mean time, we need to talk about these doughnuts. Like, seriously.

I’m preparing for Christmas breakfast. Or maybe Christmas snack? Or is it Christmas dessert?

I originally wanted to top the doughnuts with crushed candy canes, but the grocery store I went to had no peppermint candy canes! What! They had Starburst and Lifesaver candy canes. But somehow, I don’t think it would work out the same way. So I chopped up peppermint bark for my doughnuts instead. And it was sooo good. But you can choose to do either one or both. I promise you won’t regret it.

Cranberry Crisp Bars

Just 4 days left!

Are you ready? Because I’m definitely not. Maybe it’s because Christmas is on a weekend this year, and since I don’t really have extra time off, it doesn’t quite feel like the holidays, which also means I’m procrastinating.

My Christmas shopping is just partially complete. But that’s okay since I won’t see all of my friends before Christmas, so I still have some time left. Shh… Don’t tell on me.

Cranberry Crisp Bars | Cooking with a Wallflower

I do have some baking to do though. We’re going to spend the weekend with family. I’m thinking hot chocolate, popcorn, cookies, and Christmas movies like the Home Alone series or the Hallmark Channel movies. Or maybe we’ll go to Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose. If you ever get the chance to go, you have to order the snowman hot chocolate from the food stands. It’s seriously one of the best! Especially when you’re walking around looking at Christmas displays in the cold. And how can you resist having a snowman in your hot chocolate?
