It’s the first official week of fall, and I can already feel the air starting to shift. It feels a little cooler, and the sun is starting to set earlier now. As much as I’m going to miss the long summer days, I’m really looking forward to fall. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I’ve been testing out fall flavored recipes for a few weeks now, and I’m excited that I can finally start sharing them with you. Another week, and then it’ll be pumpkin appropriate too. I feel September is still too early for pumpkin and pumpkin spice. Is it just me?

There’s something about the flavors of fall that’s just so comforting. And I want to start my day with that kind of warm comfort, especially as it gets cooler. Think sweet and tart apples, maple syrup, cinnamon. All those delicious flavors of fall in a bowl of creamy oatmeal.

One of my favorite apples of the moment are the SweeTango apples, a relative of the honey crisp apples. They’re sweet, tart, and crisp, exactly what I look for in my apples. Stemilt Growers sent me a box of these apples, and I couldn’t wait to use them.

The best way to eat this warm bowl of apple cinnamon steel cut oatmeal is topped with slices of crisp apples and a drizzle of almond milk. The almond milk makes the oatmeal so much creamier.

In a medium sized pot, heat up the water until it comes to a boil. Add steel cut oats to the pot and allow it to cook for about 30 minutes. Make sure to stir every once in awhile to prevent the oats from sticking and burning at the bottom. About 15 minutes into cooking the steel cut oats, add diced apples, ground cinnamon, and brown sugar. Stir to incorporate the apples, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Once the oats are cooked, and the apples have softened, remove the pot from heat and let it cool.

Great recipe Andrea. This is the first time I have heard of Tango apples. I have had Honey Crisp apples before. They are one of my favorites. I will have to try these Tango apples. How did you get so lucky to receive a box of apples from Stemitt?
