Just one more day until the 4th of July! Do you have plans for the day? Are you lucky enough to get extra days off for the holiday? I’m usually off on Wednesdays so technically I don’t get the holiday off. But I’m at least hoping to be able to relax and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
In the mean time, let’s talk about this blueberries and cream steel cut oatmeal.
I am such a fan of hearty breakfasts, but I don’t always get a chance to eat it because I’m always rushing out of the house. But what I love about these oats is that you can put them in a small mason jar and pack them to go.
If you’re a fan of blueberries, this blueberries and cream steel cut oatmeal is exactly what you’ll want for breakfast all summer long. I love that every bite of this creamy steel cut oatmeal is filled with swirls of blueberry jam. You have the perfect balance of sweetness and a taste of summer in every spoonful.
In a medium sized pot, heat up the water until it comes to a boil. Add steel cut oats to the pot and allow it to cook for about 30 minutes. Make sure to stir every once in awhile to prevent the oats from sticking and burning at the bottom. Once the oats are cooked, remove the pot from heat and let it cool.
Stir in almond milk to make the oatmeal creamy.
When ready to serve, place some oatmeal into a bowl then top with blueberry jam.
To make the blueberry jam, add blueberries, granulated sugar, and water to a small pot. Cook for about 10-15 minutes until the blueberries breakdown and thicken.
Add more oatmeal on top, and add another layer of blueberry jam. Use a fork or a knife or a chopstick to swirl the blueberry jam into the oatmeal.
Serve this blueberries and cream steel cut oatmeal with more almond milk, especially if the oatmeal is too thick. Top with fresh and frozen berries.

- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- ¼ cup almond milk
- 6 ounce fresh blueberries
- 1 teaspoon water
- 3 teaspoons granulated sugar

This looks delicious! I love homemade steel cut oats porridge with fruit. My husband doesn’t, so I rarely make it since it’s a bit of an effort. I tried to “like” this post, but am encountering difficulties. Not just liking you post, but someone elses’, too. I’ll have to figure out what’s wrong. I wonder if it has something to do with my Facebook set-up?

This sounds yummy. My usual breakfast is Bircher muesli, so I’m quite happy to do oat prepping and soaking. This sounds like it would be a good alternative, would be good to try something different 🙂
