When you think of autumn desserts, what do you usually think of?
I automatically think pumpkin and apple. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin pastries, apple pie, apple tarts. You get the picture. All things pumpkin and apples.
But fall is pear season too, and yet I feel we often overlook them. So of course, I have to remedy that.
Last fall, I was introduced to poached pears. This dessert was something completely new to me, but it’s so delicious and easy to make. I just love the elegance of these poached pears. They look as though you’ve spent hours putting each individual dish together and yet it takes less than 30 minutes to prepare and then serve. It can’t be easier than that to surprise your guests during the holidays.
With these pears, I decided to poach them in apple cider, using my homemade apple cider recipe. But! You can use store bought apple cider, apple juice, or even sparkling apple cider. I’ve played with each one before. And they all work perfectly for poaching. I love using apple cider though because there’s already so much flavor. When you poach the pears, the pears will absorb the liquid and take on those flavors. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to add a little bit more cinnamon to enhance the fall flavors.
First, remove the skin from the pears. You can leave the pears whole or you can cut the bottom of the pear and remove the seeds. You also want to try to keep the stem. It looks so much nicer that way. When choosing pears for poaching, you want something firm since you’ll be cooking them for at least 20 minutes.
Place the pears in a small to medium pot. Now, add the apple cider or your poaching liquid of choice. Add ground cinnamon and granulated sugar. Turn the heat to low medium. Allow the pear to simmer for about 10-13 minutes before turning it over and cooking for an additional 10-12 minutes. Once the pears have softened, remove the pears from heat.
Plate the pears and drizzle some of the apple cider over the pear. The apple cider would have thickened into a syrup like consistency.
Serve the poached pears with candied pecans and pomegranates.

- 2 medium sized pears
- 1 cup apple cider
- ½ tablespoon granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons pomegranate arils
- ¼ - ½ cup candied pecans
- Peel the skin from the pears. Cut the bottom of the pear to make the bottom even and use a spoon to remove the seeds.
- Place the pears into a small pot. Add the apple cider, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon. Turn on the heat to low medium.
- Allow the pear to simmer for about 10 minutes. Then turn the pear to the other side and allow it to simmer for another 10 minutes until they become soft. The apple cider will have thicken into syrup.
- Remove the pears from heat and plate them. Drizzle the apple cider syrup over the pears.
- Serve the pears with candied pecans and pomegranate.
