Classic rice crispy treats mixed with matcha green tea powder and topped with black sesame seeds. This small batch of matcha rice crispy treats is simple, delicious, and shareable.

I’m headed inland this weekend to Sacramento for the California State Fair. I have never been to the state fair, or county fair, before so I’m really excited to see all the unusual carnival foods that everyone talks about. Actually…. I’m not sure if I’ll want to try everything. Lol. Deep fried everything seems a little overwhelming. And the heat. It’s supposed to be in the 90’s, which I honestly am not used to anymore since I live in San Francisco now.
While I’m out melting away in the heat, I’d like to share these matcha rice crispy treats with you.
If you’re a fan of matcha and rice crispies, this would definitely be the perfect recipe for you. It requires just a few ingredients, which you might already have at home, and very little effort. Just a whole lot stirring to prevent the ooey gooeyness of the marshmallows from sticking to the bottom of your pot.
It’s a small enough batch that you won’t have to worry about overeating these treats. But enough that you can share with your family and friends, if you want to.
Line a 9×9 inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease the bottom and sides with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large pot, melt butter over medium to low heat. Once the butter has melted, add marshmallows to the pot. Smaller marshmallows are definitely easier to melt. I had only large marshmallows and they took forever to melt.
Use a spatula to stir the marshmallows until partially melted. Add matcha green tea powder and stir to incorporate it into the melted marshmallows. Once the matcha marshmallows are completely, melt, stir in the rice crispy cereal. Add about a cup at a time to make it easier to stir.
When all of the rice crispy cereal is coated, pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan. Press the rice crispies mixture down and into the corners and sides. Sprinkle black sesame seeds on top.
Let the matcha rice crispy treats rest for about an hour or two before cutting into them.
Slice into 16 matcha rice crispy treats.

I love rice crispies! I’ll have to try this. I won’t feel so guilty knowing there is matcha in them. That makes them healthy, right? 😉
How was the State Fair? I actually live in Sacramento but we avoid going every year because it’s usually in the 100s here when the fair opens. Hopefully you got to eat some yummy fair foods! My friend went the other week and indulged in some deep fried Twix!

I keep telling myself that these are healthy cuz there’s green tea in it. lol. The State Fair was pretty fun. We actually went later in the day, around 7:00, so we weren’t in the heat for too long. I didn’t do any of the rides, but it’s fun to walk around, see the animals, and eat some of the fair foods. We also played some of the games, but they’re ridiculously hard to win at. I think you should try it out at least once, just go later in the day so it’s not as hot. I used to live in Davis and I never went. Suddenly I wanted to go this year. lol
