Bagels and cream cheese are one of my favorite on the go breakfasts. I mean, what can be easier than slicing a bagel in half and spreading a generous amount of cream cheese on both halves? Yes, both halves. Cuz I like my cream cheese on a lot of things, especially bagels.
But… not in my sushi rolls. I am definitely not a fan of that. But my friend Kim might disagree with me on that.
I love that these homemade everything bagels require just a few simple ingredients: all purpose flour, honey Greek yogurt, baking powder, salt, egg wash, and everything but the bagel seasoning. They taste amazing when they’re fresh out of the oven, but you can definitely reheat them and serve them with cream cheese for your everyday breakfast.
Earlier this year, I came across this easy bagel recipe from Skinny Taste. And I’ve been wanting to make them myself at home. Especially when I discovered that this recipe doesn’t require yeast! I’ve worked with yeast before, but I like to avoid it as much as possible because I have no patience for waiting. Lol. With the exception of this cheesy garlic pull apart bread. Maybe one day it’ll change and I’ll work with yeast more, but today is not the day. Lol.
When I made these easy bagels exactly as the recipe, I realized that the bagels ended up too tangy. You know how Greek yogurt has that super tangy taste? Especially when it’s plain Greek yogurt?
If you’re a fan of the tangy taste similar to sourdough bread, then the original recipe is perfect for you. But I’m actually not a fan of that tanginess. I know. I know. I live in San Francisco. How can I not be a fan of sourdough? *shrug*
So to reduce that tanginess in the bagels that plain Greek yogurt leaves behind, I switched out the plain Greek yogurt for the honey Greek yogurt. You definitely want to use Greek yogurt though because it’s thick and not runny like regular yogurt. The honey Greek yogurt reduces that tanginess which is exactly what I was hoping for.
Preheat the oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray the surface with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large mixing bowl, add all purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Use a whisk to mix well.
Drain the yogurt if there is any liquid accumulating at the top. You want as little liquid as possible to be added to the dough. Add honey Greek yogurt to the mixing bowl, and use a fork to mix until all the ingredients are well combined.
Generously dust a flat work surface with all purpose flour. I even lightly covered my hands with flour so that the dough doesn’t stick to my hands. Place the dough onto the work surface and knead the dough several times until the dough is no longer super sticky and doesn’t stick to your hands. Add more flour to your work surface as needed.
Once the dough is ready, divide the dough into four even balls. Roll the balls into 3/4inch thick ropes and then join the ends together to form a bagel. Or if you prefer, you can break each of the balls in half and roll those into balls to create bagel bites instead. As you can see, I made a combination of both.
In a small bowl, whisk together egg and milk. Brush the egg wash over the top of each of the bagels or bagel bites. Sprinkle a generous amount of everything but the bagel seasoning over the bagels.
Bake these homemade everything bagels for about 25-28 minutes until the tops of the bagels are browned.
Serve these homemade everything bagels with cream cheese or your favorite ingredients.

Andrea, I am a little concerned about your use of baking powder in this bagel recipe. Baking powder has a lot of aluminum powder in it. A recipe that calls for 2 1/2 Tbsp of baking powder is at least 2 Tbsp of ground up metal. This silver colored low density metal is usually made into soft drink cans, pots, pans and aluminum foil. And like most metals it slowly reacts with the air to form aluminum oxide.
