Sea salt tossed with matcha green tea powder for a unique seasoning. This matcha green tea sea salt will take your food to the next level.
It’s spring! It’s spring!
I don’t know if the weather knows it yet because it’s still raining pretty hard here every few days. But it definitely looks like spring with so many pretty flowers blooming.
I was just at Golden Gate Park, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. <3
Today, I wanted to try something new and different.
Have you ever been to a Korean BBQ restaurant? There’s one called Gen in San Jose, which is all you can eat. You get to cook your own food and order whatever you want from the menu. What I really loved was that they had green tea salt for you to season your meat and vegetables with. The green tea in the salt is relatively subtle, but you can definitely taste hints of it.
I loved it so much, I knew that I had to try to make my own at home.
So ta da… matcha green tea sea salt.
This matcha green tea sea salt is super easy to make. It takes just two ingredients: matcha green tea powder and sea salt. Simple, right?
It gives your food a little something extra. While this recipe gives just a hint of green tea, you can always add more of the green tea powder for a stronger flavor profile.
Grind the sea salt to your liking. If you like the sea salt fine, then grind it until it’s fine. If you like your sea salt coarse, then grind it coarse.
Add the sea salt into a small jar. Next, add the matcha green tea powder. Close the lid to the jar, and shake until the sea salt and matcha green tea powder are well incorporated.
Use the matcha green tea sea salt as a seasoning for your meats and vegetables or even on top of your desserts.
Enjoy!
- ⅛ cup finely ground or coarsely ground sea salt
- ½ tablespoon matcha green tea powder, more for stronger flavor
- Add the sea salt into a small jar. Next, add the matcha green tea powder. Close the lid to the jar, and shake until the sea salt and matcha green tea powder are well incorporated.
- Use the matcha green tea sea salt as a seasoning for your meats and vegetables or even on top of your desserts.

I know about Matcha as a tea powder but never think that it can be use as flavour in food. I am also now going to use Matcha power in my today’s meal 🙂

Such a simple way to make seasoning, but I love it. Matcha is a favorite of mine.

Wow! Wow! Wow! This is amazing, Andrea. I haven’t been to a Korean restaurant, but I am planning to go sometime soon. I am not sure if they have this interesting sea salt like yours, but if not, I could make my own. Thanks for sharing at Fiesta Friday #164. 🙂

Really interesting! I guess I have to try this 🙂 But I am still a bit concerned about the bitter flavour of matcha. Could it possibly affect the taste of your meat dishes (in a bad way)?
Andrea| Cooking with a Wallflower says
The flavor is really light. So it shouldn’t affect your meat dishes in a bad way. Green Tea Salt is can be found in Japanese and Korean restaurants to flavor BBQ meats. Hope that helps!
Len Kagami says
Oh! Thanks a lot for this tip 🙂 I might try it the next time I make Korean BBQ myself.
