I’m utterly obsessed with the vibrant color of this purple yam bun that my aunt made.
My aunt loves making baos (buns) and giving them away to family and friends. Most of the time, she uses yam or sweet potatoes. But every once in awhile, she uses purple yam in the dough and it turns into this pretty purple color.
Have I ever mentioned that my dad’s side of the family are all cooks? At one point or another, all of his siblings and his parents have worked in the restaurant business. And for awhile, I think it was disappointing to them, that none of the kids were interested in cooking.
Not to say that we weren’t interested in food. Many of us were foodies. Just not into cooking.
It was just a random sequence of events that led me to finally take an interest in experimenting in the kitchen and start a blog. And well, here we are. =)
In this week’s finds…

In India, we use purple yam in a variety of curries, including Undhiyu, a Gujarati dish that uses an abundance of vegetables to celebrate harvest season. We rarely find purple yam in Bangalore, though, where I live, so I miss Undhiyu all the time. Gujarat is where I was brought up, so I grew up eating Undhiyu every harvest season.
For the undhiyu, do you use vegetables that are seasonal? Or is it specific vegetables? So curious!
@Andrea Giang
Hi there! We use most vegetables that are available in harvest season, to make the undhiyu. It is a harvest season specialty. But then, this day, most of these veggies are available throughout the year, so undhiyu can be made any time of the year.

You have always interesting food ideas, Andrea. My request goes back a bit. I was intrigued by a reference you made to a dish that was made from leftover porridge (does it have to be leftover?) mixed with flour and shallots and cooked in broth. I would be pleased to hear the full recipe. It sounds intriguing.
I actually don’t have the recipe, but I’ll let you know as soon as I do. =)
I never heard of purple yams. I’d love to try one of those buns.
Most beautiful purple bun! Your aunt is skilled (and your whole family, it sounds!). Happy
Easter! ^^
Aww, thanks, Liz!
That is so cool! I’d love to see the inside. Is this sweet in flavour, or more like bread that happens to be purple?
It’s slightly sweet. I need to learn how to make these. lol
